Sydney airport terminal hits 1m mark

Sydney airport's T2 terminal has handled one million passengers in a month for the first time.

Sydney airport has announced that its T2 terminal has handled more than a million passengers in a single month for the first time.

The facility acts as the domestic terminal for Jetstar, Virgin Blue, Rex, QantasLink and Aeropelican.

Sydney Airport Corporation confirmed that the passenger milestone was reached in the month of October.

Russell Balding, chief executive of the company, said: "T2 is now the busiest of the three terminals at Sydney airport and is a vital part of the leisure travel market.

"T2 is the former Ansett terminal. I'm sure people recall that when Sydney Airport Corporation acquired the terminal it was pretty much a ghost terminal. Since then we have transformed it into a vibrant and busy transport hub. It is a real success story."

Mr Balding also claimed that the achievement in October was encouraging news for the Australian tourism industry as a whole in the run-up to Christmas.

Earlier this year Sydney airport's T2 was given an upgrade to provide passengers with more facilities and a wider range of retail outlets.
