Glasgow International Airport

Tell me about Glasgow International airport

Under the same ownership as Heathrow and Stansted, Glasgow International airport has become the busiest in Scotland as well as the fifth largest in the UK. Opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1966, the airport served 1.5 million customers in its first year. Now, around 30 carriers provide access to 90 destinations worldwide, serving seven million passengers a year.

What makes Glasgow International special?

A £31 million terminal extension in 2008 provided customers with state-of-the-art facilities to rival those found in any other UK airport. Their aim to minimise the environmental impact of operations at every opportunity shows a commitment to sustainable practices. The airport's ‘Flightpath Fund’ donated £50,000 to the local community in 2011 to fund youth projects and purchase equipment.

Has Glasgow International airport won any other awards?

In 2011, Glasgow earned two stars from the National Recycling Stars Scheme for increasing the amount of waste they recycled. The airport also gained two health and safety awards for their working environment in 2010. That year also saw it crowned Best Airport With Over 6 Million Passengers by The Airport Operators Association.
