The Building Design of the Fortune Theatre
One of the most intimate theatres in London, the Fortune theatre has the capacity for just over 400 people across three levels. The theatre is Art Deco in design, and was one of the first to be built using the ferro concrete construction process.
The Fortune has a unique quirk in the design - it is adjoined to the Scottish National Church. The church corridor runs adjacent to the auditorium of the Fortune theatre, the Stalls are beneath the corridor, the Dress Circle parallel and the Upper Circle above it.
The History of the Fortune Theatre
The first theatre built after World War 1, the Fortune was commissioned by author and playwright, Laurence Cowen and designed by Ernest Schaufelberg in 1924. The theatre shares its name with an Elizabethan theatre that was plagued with bad luck and subsequently burnt down in 1621 - not so fortuneate!
The current Fortune theatre stands on the site of the Old Albion Tavern, an Elizabethan haunt for playwrights and actors of that period. The theatre opened with the Laurence Cowen production, Sinnners! - unfortunately for the theatre's founder the production only lasted two weeks.
The theatre has been home to the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) who used the theatre as a base for entertaining the forces during the 30's and as a site for amateur dramatics. When the theatre was used as it was intended a number of famous names and productions graced the stage. Maureen Lipman, Dame Judi Dench, Dudley Moore and Alan Bennett are among the famous faces that have performed at the Fortune over the years.
The theatre is now synonymous with the adaptation of Susan Hill's novel The Woman in Black, which has been playing at the venue since 1989. In 2001 the production celebrated its 5000th performance, and in 2005 the Ambassador Theatre Group added the Fortune to their growing number of West End theatres.
