The Building Design of the Palace Theatre
The Palace theatre was commissioned by Richard D'Oyly Carte. The architects were G. Holloway and Thomas Colcutt.
The Palace Theatre is a towering building, almost gothic in style with five stories of dark red brick with octagonal towers on the top. The grand foyer is clad with brown and black marble. Romanesque columns and arches wind all the way up the stairways. The auditorium is dark brown and red with classical figures, swags, and swirls flecked with gold. Mirrors, chandeliers, velvet and complex moulding complete the grand imposing look.
During the late 1950's the interior marble work covered by paint but the theatre was extensively restored in the 1980's and the marble re-exposed.
The History of the Palace Theatre
The Palace theatre was initially intended to be 'The Royal English Opera House' and opened as such in 1891 with a production of Ivanho. The opera house was not a great success and the theatre eventually became a popular Variety House.
Musicals at the Palace theatre include: No, No, Nanette!, Song of Norway, The Sound of Music ( 2,385 performances), Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar - 3,358 performances and Les Misérables which became the Palace's longest running production with 7,602 performances!
