Biography Of Connie Fisher

Connie Fisher has recently become a household name after winning the final of BBC 1's 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' on Saturday 16th September 2006. 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' was an audition on a grand scale for an incredible role, the part of Maria Von Trapp in West End stage show The Sound of Music produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ians.

23 Year old Connie Fisher was working in a call centre in Pembrokeshire before entering the BBC show, 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria.' Connie was born in Belfast and moved to Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire at the age of six. From a very young age Connie was a member of Cor Newyddion Da where she was encouraged to perform as a soloist and she competed annually. Connie was a member of the Haverfordwest Operatic Society where she performed as Mable in their production of Pirates of Penzance.

Connie was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre of Great Britain between 1999 and 2002. While with this theatre group she played the lead role in Lady of the Lake in the production's 2001 tour of Japan. Connie won the Wilbert Lloyd Roberts Scholarship in 2002.

Connie Fisher attended the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London for 3 years. She completed a degree in Musical Theatre while pursuing her passion for acting. While at the academy Connie performed in many productions including "Annie Get Your Gun," "Jerry's Girls" and "A...my name is Alice."

Connie's stage credits have included:

  • Viola in Twelfth Night
  • Margery in Vinegar Tom
  • Beatie in Roots
  • Morgan LeFay in Lady of the Lake (Japan Tour)
  • Mable in Pirates of Penzance
  • Before winning 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' Connie had appeared in several other TV shows. These included:

  • Jane McDonald's "Star for a Night"
  • Can I Cymru
  • Owen Money's Just Up Your Street
  • BBC Children in Need
  • Noson Lawen

  • Connie Fisher has dreamed of performing in the West End from a very young age. She said on 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' that her grandmother had introduced her to The Sound of Music as a child and that she had dreamt of playing the role of Maria Von Trapp ever since.

Connie promised viewers that every night would be "an opening night" and that she would not let audiences down. When Graham Norton announced that Connie had won 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria,' she looked shocked and thrilled. She thanked the viewers for their votes and sang the title song The Sound of Music.

Connie has said on the show, 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria,' that after she graduated from theatre school she found it very difficult to get a job in acting. She was often turned down at auditions and when she started working in telesales she lost her self belief. She has said that the show is a fantastic opportunity and that it has restored her self belief and her self confidence. Connie has become a more confident performer and has performed consistently well on the show. Connie was the judges favourite and the bookies favourite to win.

The BBC show 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' has been hugely successful and popular Saturday night entertainment. The show whittled down thousands of applicants for the part to a final 10. These 10 girls had been battling it out over the past weekends for this prestigious role. Andrew Lloyd Webber originally came up with the idea for the search after failing to sign Hollywood star, Scarlett Johannson.

The search for Maria had a huge following from the British public and was a major talking point across the country. The final of 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' attracted huge audience figures. Over 7.5 million viewers tuned in to see Connie Fisher win the role of Maria Von Trapp in the public vote. This show is the first time that a leading role in a West End musical has been cast by the public.

Andrew Lloyd Webber had been chairing the panel of judges in the show. Until the final, Andrew Lloyd Webber had had some say in the competition. However, the final on Saturday night was decided entirely by the British public. Before the winner of 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' was announced Andrew Lloyd Webber had said that Connie would make the best Maria.
