Marguerite - Theatre Royal Haymarket

Currently showing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket is the all new West End adaptation of Dumas' La Dame aux Camélias more commonly known in English as Camille. Brought to the stage by the makers of Les Misérables, Marguerite promises to delight audiences in the atmospheric surroundings of the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Building and design

This exquisite theatre lends a special sense of occasion to all shows performed there. With polished marble, gold leaf and a stunning chandelier composed from over two thousand lead crystals, the Haymarket certainly deserves its Royal prefix. Not only beautiful, the Royal Haymarket is also a innovative theatre, being the first to use a picture frame proscenium. In 1994 the theatre underwent major sympathetic renovation seeing the gold leaf replaced, marble polished and the chandeliers extensively cleaned. New carpets, new upholstery and hand printed wallpapers were also fitted.

History

The Theatre Royal Haymarket dates back to 1720, making it the third-oldest London theatre still in use. The building moved to its current location in 1821, the original being a short distance away on the same street. The new Royal Haymarket was designed by John Nash, architect of the iconic Brighton Pavilion. The theatre's pedigree goes far beyond its architecture: The Theatre Royal Haymarket was the first to stage a matinée performance. Mary Rose and The Little Minister both written by Peter Pan and Wendy Author J. M. Barrie enjoyed runs of over 300 performances there and the likes of Derek Jacobi, Maggie Smith, Robert Lindsay and Helen Mirren have appeared on stage.

Location of Haymarket Theatre

The Haymarket is located equidistant between Piccadilly Circus and Charing Cross Station.
