The Piccadilly Theatre

Showing Summer 2008: Grease

It's 1959 at Rydell High School Chicago and the students are returning to school after summer break, Danny Zuko - the leader of the 'coolest' group at Rydell boasts about his summer fling with an Australian girl he met at the beach. On the other side of the school Sandra Dee enrolls at Rydell high after moving from Australia and quickly becomes friends with the Pink Ladies - the 'coolest' female group at Rydell. In no time at all Danny bumps into Sandy and their separate stories of the summer fling becomes apparent, Danny has to put on a macho persona to save his 'cool' reputation and Sandy cannot believe that this is the guy she fell for at the beach. Danny has to decide whether he wants to save his reputation or be with Sandy and also find a way to finish his senior year at high school without being flunked. Grease is most definitely the word this summer so book your London theatre break to see it with us!

The Building Design of the Piccadilly Theatre

The Piccadilly is a huge theatre on four floors, one of the largest built in London in the 20th century. The building was designed by Bertie Crewe and Edward A. Stone for the impresario Edward Laurillard. The architecture shows a strong influence from John Nash's frontages in Regent Street with a Portland stone facade.

It's 1,400 (now 1,232 ) seat auditorium aimed for expansive luxury. The interior is art deco in style. The art deco fittings in green and gold were designed by Marc-Henri and Laverdet.

The History of the Picadilly

The theatre opened with the musical 'Blue Eyes' by Jerome Kern. History was made in 1928 when the Piccadilly theatre premiered the first talking picture to be shown in Britain, 'The Singing Fool' - with Al Jolson. Talkies continued to be shown for the next year.

In 1941, Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit premiered at the Piccadilly theatre. Noel Coward brought a pre-war touch back to London's West End with Blithe Spirit. Described as "an improbable farce", the play contained no references to the war. In 1942 John Gielgud brought Macbeth to the Piccadilly. The bad luck rumored to dog 'the Scottish play' manifested in 1943 - The Piccadilly Theatre was damaged by a flying bomb.
In 1945, the theatre reopened. Short runs occupied the Piccadilly until the interior was completely redecorated in 1955 with the addition of red plush seating.

American drama and musicals gave the Piccadilly some cachet in the 1960's and '70's including Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (1964), Man Of La Mancha (1969) A Streetcar Named Desire (1974). The RSC brought some of their productions here while waiting for the Barbican to open, including Educating Rita (1980).
The 1990's witnessed an expansion in musicals, ballet and dance. The Piccadilly Theatre staged the most successful commercial ballet season ever to play in the West End, Swan Lake.
