25 years after graduation, 6 former students gather at a reunion dinner. What begins as a normal light-hearted evening of small talk and reminiscing turns into much more when old feuds and friendships resurface in this revival of Michael Frayn's classic 1976 comedy West End farce.

The History of the Comedy Theatre

The Comedy Theatre was originally known as The Royal Comedy Theatre and was opened on October 15th 1881. The name had to be changed in 1884 as the original theatre owner didn't have the warrant to call the theatre 'Royal.' The first performance, La Mascott, was, however, attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The New Watergate 'Theatre Club' formed in 1956 and was held in The Comedy Theatre. 'Theatre Clubs' arose as a reaction to the decision by the Lord Chamberlain to ban certain films which were deemed unsuitable to appear on a public stage. For a nominal membership fee, members were able to view previously banned plays. Under such guise, the Comedy Theatre presented plays such as Tennessee Williams' 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof' until censorship rules were relaxed and, eventually, disposed of.

The Architecture of The Comedy Theatre

The Comedy Theatre was designed by architect Thomas Verity with setting on four levels to accommodate 1,180 people though today the seating arrangements have been adjusted and, though still on four floors, the theatres capacity has been reduced to 783.

Though it was originally intended to be lit by electricity - which was a very new thing at this time - the Comedy Theatre was at first lit by a large gas 'sun burner' in the roof and was one of the first theatres to be opened under the new by-laws on precautions against fires.

The theatre has undergone many re-furbishments and re-decorations over the years, most notably in 1950 when the rear of the building was extended with new dressing rooms and stage doors.

The theatre is air conditioned and has three licensed bars. Access for wheelchair users, guide dogs are permitted and a state-of-the-art Sennheiser infra-red listening system is available for the hard of hearing. Please contact the theatre if you are in need of assistance.
