Book Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre on line
The Building Design of The Aldwych Theatre
The Aldwych Theatre was designed by WGR Sprague and built by Seymour Hicks in conjunction with Charles Frohman, an American impresario. The interior of the theatre is handsomely decorated in a Georgian style. When the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre took over the Aldwych in the 1960's a number of alterations were made, an apron stage was built with a new proscenium and lighting system. New circle boxes were constructed and the old ones absorbed into the stage area.
The History of The Aldwych Theatre
In the last years of the nineteenth century much of London's old West End was demolished and reconstructed. The new streets of Aldwych and Kingsway were built and plans were made for two new theatres with identical facades to be built along the Aldwych. The two theatres, the Aldwych and the Strand were built either side of the Waldorf Hotel and opened in 1905.
The Aldwych Theatre has been home to a wide range of entertainment. From 1925 until 1933 the Aldwych housed a series of farces by Ben Tavers, now known as 'The Aldwych Farces'.
From the 1930's the theatre was owned by the Abrahams family, plays included, A Street Car Named Desire, Brouhaha and Watch It Sailor. In 1960 the Royal Shakespeare Company took over the Aldwych as its London Base for over twenty years. Since then the theatre has enjoyed a successful and busy few decades staging many productions as varied as The BFG and An Inspector Calls.
