With all the passion and style of Motown, Dancing In The Streets is soul at its best!

The Building Design of The Playhouse Theatre

The current building was designed in 1907 by Blow and Billerey and renamed The Playhouse Theatre, following the destruction of the original, Royal Avenue Theatre by falling masonry from nearby Charing Cross Station.

The stylish curved exterior of the building is rather overpowered by the towering architecture of the adjacent station. However, as a contrast, the interior is true to its thespian roots, with striking murals and a luxurious gold trimmed colour scheme accentuating the grandiose features of the theatre.

The History of The Playhouse Theatre

Originally opening as the Royal Avenue Theatre in March 1882, this theatre was host to Shaw's first West End play, 'Arms and Men'.

When it reopened in 1907 after the tragic event at the turn of the century, it began a new life as the Playhouse Theatre.

It was here, among these grand surroundings, that the BBC's Radio programmes were recorded, including Hancock's Half Hour, Steptoe and Son and various panel games.

The BBC left The Playhouse in the mid 70's, after which, the theatre struggled to compete with others in the West End as a major venue. The occasional hit such as A Doll's House or An Inspector Calls were some of its few successes and it has changed hands a number of times.

Playhouse Theatre Facilities
The Playhouse Theatre is air conditioned and can cater for wheelchair users.
Location of The Playhouse Theatre
The Playhouse Theatre is located on the corner of Craven Street and Villiers Street on Northumberland Avenue, very close to Charing Cross and Embankment underground stations.
