Carousel - Music

Music: Oscar Hammerstein III

A true tear-jerker, the timeless music and lyrics of Carousel take the audience on a magnificent journey, pitching and soaring through joy, loss, heaven and hell.

The show was created by now legendary American song-writing duo Rodgers and Hammerstein. They were prolific in the golden age of the musical and wrote some of the most popular shows of the 40s and 50s. Carousel is often considered the greatest work of a duo who wrote such classics as The King and I and Oklahoma!.

A revolutionary show when it was first shown in 1945, Carousel was among the first to feature a tragic plot. This revolutionary foresight shines through in the music of the show, which remains as fresh and relevant as that written for modern musicals. Each song evokes a heartfelt response from the audience, this coupled with the dramatic, compelling script creates one of the most powerful productions in the West End today .

The music of Carousel is a soaring, timeless victory for Rodgers and Hammerstein. Each song is exquisitely tailored for its scene and effortlessly reflects and enhances the action on stage.
