The Building Design of the Lyric ShaftesburyTheatre
The Lyric theatre is a Grade II listed building designed by architect C.J. Phillips and is the oldest surviving theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.
The building is unassuming with a facade of red brick - it lacks the instant appeal of neighbouring theatres such as the Gielgud but has a certain unexpected charm. The large windows and neutral tones give the theatre an understated, genteel beauty.
The overall design of the building lends to its appeal and is one of the few London theatres with an auditorium built for maximum audience participation and unrestricted views. The exterior of the building was fully restored in 1994 and stands today much as it did in the nineteenth century, the interior was given a spruce around 1932 and has remained the same in decoration ever since.
The History of the Lyric Shaftesbury Theatre
After opening in 1888 the Lyric initially staged light operattas before opening its doors to a wider audience with light comedies and straight dramas.
Many productions both famous and relatively unheard of have graced the stage at the Lyric including How the Other Half Lives a play by Alan Ayckbourn and The Little Hut by Andre Roussin which ran for 1,261 performances. Alan Bennett's Habeas Corpus starring Alec Guinnes and Alan Bennett himself premiered at the Lyric and over the years names such as Kenneth Branagh, Leonard Rossiter and Emma Thompson have appeared in productions running at the theatre.
Facilities at the Lyric Shaftesbury Theatre
The Lyric theatre is accessible for the disabled, guide dogs are permitted within the auditorium and the theatre is equipped with a hearing loop system.
There are four seating levels within the theatre and four licensed bars. The Lyric theatre is fully air conditioned.
Location of the Lyric Shaftesbury Theatre
