Boeing Boeing - Themes from the London Show

Author: Mark Camoletti and Beverley Cross
Adaptation: Matthew Warchus

The story revolves around a playboy architect's complex relationship with three air hostesses. Bernard, the protagonist, leads an otherwise complicated lifestyle, made simple by his three fiancees perfect schedules. However, the arrival of his friend Robert, the vital change of schedule and the introduction of new Boeing plane leads to farcical confusion.

Boeing Boeing

Boeing Boeing is defined as a farce, it is a light dramatic production with highly unlikely plot situations and slapstick elements for comic effect. Within this farce there are a number of underlying themes of which mostly relate to the era it was written in, the 1960s. A major theme is technological progress and it's impact on the human race, although in Boeing Boeing the introduction of the new boeing plane means Bernard is caught out for his philandering, the theme is relevant and it relates to the introduction of machinery within the 1960s. Other themes include cons and scams, playing the field, mistaken identities and some old-fashioned national stereotypes for example pushy American women and nationalistic Germans.

Essentially Boeing Boeing seeks to provide comedy and escapist fun, portraying a simpler time when air fare was cheap and air hostesses were glamourous. Boeing Boeing was a huge hit in the 1960's and with such a fantastic cast and amusing plot - it is sure to be a smash hit all over again.
