Sheila Hancock is a well known and loved British actress. She has a wealth of acting experience in stage, film and television. Sheial Hancock was born in 1933 on The Isle of Wight, England. She attended The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Dartford County Grammar School.

Sheila Hancock's first marriage was to the actor Alec Ross. They were married from 1954 until Alec died in 1971 from cancer. Sheila Hancock and Alec Ross had a daughter together. Sheila and Alec's daughter, Melanie, was born in 1964. Sheila later married the popular British actor John Thaw. The two were married in 1973. John Thaw adopted Sheila's daughter, Melanie and she took his name. Sheila Hancock and John Thaw had one daughter together. Joanna Thaw was born in 1974. Both Melanie and Joanna have become actresses.

In addition to losing both of her husbands to cancer, Sheila herself is a survivor of breast cancer. Sheila Hancock is involved in a number of charitable projects. She is a patron of The Food Chain, a London based HIV charity. Sheila has also served as a spokesperson for Cancer BACUP.

In 1974 Sheila Hancock was awarded an OBE for her services to drama. She was also the first female artistic director at the RSC. Sheila Hancock recently published an emotional autobiography detailing her life with John Thaw. The book was a success and entitled 'The Two of Us - My Life with John Thaw.'

Stage Career and Filmography

During the 5 decades of her long-running career, Sheila Hancock has appeared in over 40 films. Sheila was particularly successful in film acting during the 1960s with roles in now classic films such as 'Carry on Cleo' (1964) and 'Night Must Fall' (1964).

Sheila Hancock has performed in both big-screen and small screen films. Sheila has also appeared in major television shows including, Doctor Who' and 'Eastenders.' Recently Sheila Hancock has appeared in 'Richard & Judy,' Dawn French's 'Girls Who Do: Comedy,' 'Saturday Night with Miriam' and 'The Paul O'Grady Show.'
