Stage Career and Filmography

Miriam Margolyes began regularly acting in films during the mid 1970s. However, she did not grasp public attention until many years later. Her 1988 role as Flora Finching in the film adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'Little Dorrit' earned Margolyes critical acclaim and public recognition. Miriam immediately followed this film success with the black comedy 'I Love You to Death.'

During the 1990s Miriam Margolyes appeared in a number of films and television shows. She even starred in her own highly successful one-woman touring show.

Miriam Margolyes received her greatest recognition from both the public and critics for the 1993 film 'The Age of Innocence.' Miriam Margolyes played the elderly, sharp-tongued Mrs Mingott - the character who gave the film it's main source of comedy. For this role, Miriam won the BAFTA award for best supporting actress.

In the past decade Miriam Margolyes has appeared in many ambitious, often 'oddball' productions with roles in films such as 'Ed and His Dead Mother.' Miriam has also found success with her voiceover work. Her most famous voiceover role yet was the voice of 'Fly,' the caring and maternal dog who looks after Babe in the films: 'Babe' and 'Babe - Pig in the City.'

In recent years Miriam Margolyes has appeared in mainstream films such as 'End of Days' and 'Magnolia.' Margolyes starred alongside Leonardo di Caprio and Clare Danes in Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo and Juliet.' Miriam recently found a young, new fan base when she played 'Professor Sprout' in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.'

Miriam Margolyes' most recent work has included the beautiful, 'Ladies in Lavender' in which she starred alongside Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench. Miriam also acted as 'Peg Sellers' in the critically acclaimed 2004 biopic 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.'

In 2002 Miriam Margolyes was awarded an OBE for her services to drama.
