Connie Fisher has shot to fame after winning the final of BBC 1's 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' on Saturday 16th September 2006. 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' was a grand scale audition for the incredible role of Maria Von Trapp in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new London production The Sound of Music.

23 Year old Connie Fisher was struggling to break into West End theatre before winning this role. Connie was attending auditions but often narrowly losing out on the parts. She worked in sales in a call centre in Pembrokeshire before entering the BBC show.

Connie Fisher was born in Belfast, Ireland. She moved to Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire at the age of six. Connie was a member of Cor Newyddion Da from a very young age. There she was encouraged to perform as a soloist and she competed in a number of local and regional competitions. Connie was a member of the Haverfordwest Operatic Society.

Connie Fisher was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre of Great Britain between 1999 and 2002. While with this theatre youth group she played the lead role in Lady of the Lake in the 2001 tour of Japan. In 2002, Connie won the Wilbert Lloyd Roberts Scholarship to attend theatre arts school.

Connie Fisher attended the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London for 3 years. She obtained afirst class BA honours degree in Musical Theatre. While at Mountview Academy Connie performed in a number of productions including "Jerry's Girls," "Annie Get Your Gun," and "A...my name is Alice."

  • Connie claims that she has dreamed of performing in the West End from a very early age. She told viewers of 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' that her grandmother had introduced her to The Sound of Music as a child. Connie said that she had dreamt of playing the role of Maria Von Trapp since then.

    Upon winning, Connie promised viewers that every night would be "an opening night" and that she would not let the audiences down. When Graham Norton announced that Connie had won 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria,' she was thrilled and appeared to be shocked. She genuinely thanked the viewers for their votes and support. To close the show, she sang the title song The Sound of Music.

    The search for Maria received a massive following from the British public and became a major conversation point throughout the country. The Saturday night final of 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria' attracted huge audience ratings. Over 7.5 million viewers watched Connie Fisher win the role of Maria Von Trapp. The show made history as the first time that a leading role in a West End musical has been cast by public vote.
