Biography of Andrew Lloyd Webber

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is a musical composer, producer and a theatre owner and was born on March 1948 in South Kensington UK. His parents were musicians - his father was a director and professor of musical composition at the Royal College of Music and his mother Jean Hermione Lloyd Webber was a singer and violin teacher. He dropped out of university at Oxford in 1965 and went into writing and composing music - a talent for which he is now known worldwide.

Sir Webber married in 1972 and had 2 children before divorcing, he married his second wife but divorced for the second time in 1990. Lloyd Webber married his present wife in 1991 and they are still happily married.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has produced numerous productions for the theatre, television and radio. Some of his most popular productions for the theatre include; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar. He is currently preparing to judge on the BBC's talent search show I'd Do Anything, in which, much like previous shows Any Dream Will Do and How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, contestants battle it out for the lead roles in the West End revival of Oliver.

Awards

In 2004, Lloyd Webber produced the film version of The Phantom of the Opera which was directed by Joel Schumacher. During his working career he has been awarded the following:

  • A Golden Globe
  • An Oscar
  • An International Emmy
  • Premium Impereale and Richard Rodgers award for Excellence in Musical Theatre
  • London Critic's Circle Award
  • Knighted in 1992 and made a life peer in 1997.

Current News

In 2004, he produced Woman in White after a successful run of Bombay Dreams which earned more than £10 million in the West End - even after being reported as not one of the greatest Lloyd Webber musicals. Sir Lloyd Webber creates on average a production after every 2 years, and 2006 will see the arrival of two new Lloyd Webber productions - Evita and The Sound of Music. Sir Lloyd Webber owns 13 theatres in the West End of London and his fortune is currently estimated at £400m .

Other Achievements

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber likes collecting art. He has a huge collection of multi-million Pre-Raphaelite art and it is believed that he has offered this collection to the public upon his death.
Lord Webber has a successful pet project focusing on restoration of churches under his Open Churches Trust which he founded in 1994.
