Tourists 'to flock to Oxford'

Oxford is expected to see a boom in tourism with the release of new movie The Golden Compass.

Up to a million additional tourists are expected to head to the city of Oxford following the release of Hollywood film The Golden Compass, which features a number of locations in the county.

Jane Lubbock, Oxford City Council's facilities manager, said the movie could boost the local economy by up to £15 million.

More than ten million people could visit the area in 2008 to see the destinations visited by the film's stars, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, the Oxford Mail reports.

A number of locations around the city of Oxford feature in the film, including Radcliffe Square, Christ Church and Exeter College.

Ms Lubbock said: "This film is great news for Oxford. It is a significant help to us breaking the ten million figure.

"People planning their holidays next year will see the film and it will remind them that Oxford is a great place to come and see."

Tourism generated more than £736 million for Oxford's economy last year and in the past films such as the Italian Job have had a beneficial effect on visitor numbers.
