Healthy holidays

The sight of 35,000 people finishing the London Marathon on Sunday may well have inspired a spring fitness drive amongst us Brits.

And simply changing our eating and exercise habits just isn't enough for many dreaming of a buff bikini body. Increasingly people are looking for a motivating holiday that offers more than cheap booze and a sun lounger, and are willing to punish as well as pamper themselves.

In recent years activity holidays, spa breaks, yoga retreats and so-called bikini boot camps have grown in popularity with UK travellers, hot on the high heels of celebrities such as Elle Macpherson, Kate Moss and Davina McCall.

Brazil, Kenya, Mexico, and the Caribbean are hot destinations for health junkies willing to hike, run, surf, cycle, swim, climb, yoga and detox their way to fitness. Hoping to capitalise on this trend at home, Centerparcs and even Butlins have entered the fitness and spa market.

Today, travel comparison site Kayak.co.uk published a list of destinations renowned for fitness and exercise. These include San Diego in the United States for triathlons; Melbourne, Australia for Aussie rules football, cricket, tennis, golf, netball and surfing; Ibiza, Spain for yoga; and Santiago, Chile for the hardcore Andean Triangle Running Challenge taking place between 28 June and 13 July this summer.

The second marathon in the World Marathon Majors series is in Boston, USA on 21 April with Beijing, Berlin, Chicago and New York City to follow throughout the year.
