Northern Ireland is becoming a popular destination for Brits planning a domestic holiday, a new study shows.

The search engine Yell compiled the results of where people in the UK searched for when they looked for domestic holidays on the site.

It was discovered that Belfast was the 5th most searched for destination for people planning a getaway.

Overall, Northern Ireland was ranked 19th - putting it ahead of traditionally popular spots like Devon and Cornwall.

Alicia Andrews, a spokesperson for the search engine, commented: "Our site data clearly shows that Northern Ireland is a popular holiday choice for people in the UK."

Jonathan Smyth, destination marketing manager with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, added: "Visitor numbers to Northern Ireland continue to rise and tourists are spending more while they are here.

"Yell.com's data is further evidence of Northern Ireland's ever increasing popularity as a 'must-see' destination."

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board is particularly keen to encourage families to visit the area. A statement on its website reads: "Northern Ireland is a great venue for all the family. Whether it's days out, keeping the kids occupied, or something for the teenagers, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the range of activities on offer."
