More needs to be done to encourage Brits to take domestic holidays, the National Consumer Council (NCC) has said.

The NCC revealed the results of research which showed that people in the UK would take more domestic holidays if they were made cheaper.

Around one in three people (32 per cent) said that they would switch future holiday plans and vacation in the UK as it would allow them to avoid flying.

However, high domestic transport costs and pricy accommodation mean that just four per cent of people carry through their wish to holiday in the UK.

The NCC also found that around 70 per cent of people from the UK are putting off using trains because they think they are far too expensive. Eight in ten said they would use rail services if they became slightly cheaper.

Ed Mayo, NCC chief executive, said: "Our island has much to offer – from beautiful countryside to historic towns and cities. But, if costs are high and customer service is poor, then people will continue to fly abroad.

"People are increasingly being asked to think before flying, but poor value at home means that this is a stick without a carrot."

Recently the government pledged £750,000 to help VisitBritain promote the best regional tourist spots in the country.
