Domestic flights in the UK allow passengers to enjoy quick access to local tourist hotpots and links with the rest of the world, an industry expert has said.

While the Civil Aviation Authority recently reported that domestic air passenger traffic in the UK has decline by two per cent this year, a spokesperson for British Airways (BA) said that regional flights were very useful for passengers.

The spokesperson added: "Domestic flights offer passengers a range of benefits that include enabling passengers to catch connecting flights to other parts of the world.

"For example [a passenger] can fly from Edinburgh to Heathrow and onto Singapore.

"We can also offer faster travel between UK destinations - flight times for domestic services are generally around one hour."

However, the spokesperson explained that the CAA's figures could be put down to the impact of the government's decision to increase Air Passenger Duty (APD) on UK flights.

Indeed, BA recently claimed that APD - doubled in the UK in February this year - unfairly targeted domestic passengers as it forces them to "pay twice".
