Self-catering breaks in the UK are still very popular with families, industry experts have argued.

A recent report from Mother & Baby magazine suggested that people in the UK were becoming disillusioned with UK holidays, believing that they were expensive and that hotels in the country were often of a low standard.

However, Hoseasons, a UK self-catering operator, has been quick to refute the findings, saying that domestic breaks are still immensely popular - especially with families.

"We have to recognise that UK hotels only represent a small part of the UK family holiday market and ensure that stories like this don't become a stick to beat the rest of the industry with," explained Richard Carrick, the chief executive of the company.

"Self-catering is the number one option for a great number of families taking a break in Great Britain. This is because the beauty of a self-catering holiday, whether on a park, cottage or boat, is the flexibility the break provides.

"We have found that more and more families are unwilling to spend hours in airports and want to discover what the UK has to offer."

Recently, prime minister Gordon Brown said that the UK was the "best place in the world" to go on holiday.
