The Evening Standard Theatre Awards nominations

It's getting near to award season in theatreland and the nominations have been announced for The Evening Standard Theatre Awards with some of Holiday Extras' West End shows appearing in the shortlist.

Previous theatre break options Treats, and Boeing Boeing are both among the nominated productions as is the new Hairspray. Hairspray is up for the Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical along with Fiddler on the Roof and Parade. The award has been renamed in honour of Ned Sherrin, writer, director, broadcaster and former presenter of the awards who passed away in October.

Among those nominated are theatre greats including Patrick Stewart and Charles Dance who are competing for Best Actor. The winners will be announced at an award ceremony hosted by Richard Wilson at The Savoy on Tuesday November 27.

  • Patrick Stewart - Macbeth. Chichester, then Gielgud

Best Actress

  • Anne-Marie Duff - Saint Joan. National's Olivier
  • Billie Piper- Treats. Garrick Theatre
  • Portia- The Member of the Wedding. Young Vic
  • Penelope Wilton - John Gabriel Borkman. Donmar Warehouse
  • Patrick Stewart - Macbeth. Chichester, then Gielgud

The Sydney Edwards Award for Best Director

  • Marianne Elliot and Tom Morris - War Horse - National's Olivier
  • Rupert Goold - Macbeth. Chichester, then Gielgud
  • Tim Supple - A Midsummer Night's Dream - by Tom Stoppard at the Royal Court & Duke of York's

The Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical

Best Design

The Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright

The Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer
