In 2007 Terminal 3, the closest of the existing terminals to T5, at BAA Heathrow underwent some major development and improvements.
The development of terminal 3 has reduced congestion and streamlined the arrivals an departures procedures for foot passengers and traffic along with improving airport security in front of the terminal. The improvements were part of a £6 billion upgrade of the airport's facilities.
Airlines that fly from Terminal 3 include American Airlines, Emirates, Jet Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
Further planned improvements to the terminal are an innovative kerbside check-in and a glass atrium extension to provide much more space for check-in. To alleviate arrivals congestion, the improvements for Heathrow terminal 3 include a new four-lane drop-off area. Additional stairway access with lifts and escalators to the departure area promises to be another welcome addition at the UK's busiest airport.
An underground baggage system in a tunnel under the airports taxiways, and due to be completed by 2011, are expected to improve transfers between Terminals 3 and 5.
