As Christmas approaches, keepers at ZSL London Zoo are preparing a festive treat for the three gorillas who will be seeing in their first Christmas in the new Gorilla Kingdom.
Gorilla Kingdom opened in Easter and is the swanky new home for Bobby, Zaire and Effie. The three gorillas will get a stocking filled with presents; wood wool - which is perfect for building gorilla nests and sunflower seeds and popcorn - a favourite treat for these apes. Bobby and Effie are London Zoo's breeding pair and will be given their stockings in the day gym where they spend quality time together in the mornings. Zaire will be opening her stocking on the island in the exhibit.
Keepers at the Zoo aren't just giving the gorillas stockings for a bit of fun - by hiding the food in stockings the keepers are encouraging these mighty apes to use their natural intelligence and curiosity to investigate their gifts. The ultimate festive enrichment activity.
The £3.5 million Gorilla Kingdom received a Royal opening on March 30th and is the zoo's flagship exhibit in their development of removing the barriers between visitors and the animals. With a cave, heated rocks and a hill, the island that forms the gorilla's outdoor space also has a waterfall that cascades through their home and into the public area. There's plenty for the Gorillas to munch on courtesy of the African style plants that have been planted to provide as natural a habitat as possible.
