Singapore 'to host first F1 night race'
Singapore's tourism industry could see a boost next year with plans for the country to host Formula One's first ever night race.
Approval has been given by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) for Singapore to host the first ever night-time Formula One Grand Prix.
The in-principle approval, which is subject to final safety checks, would see F1 drivers racing around a street circuit of public roads around Singapore's Marina Bay area under an intricate lighting system.
Colin Syn, deputy chairman of Singapore GP, said that two successful lighting tests had already been carried out.
Lim Neo Chian, chief executive of the Singapore Tourism Board, said: "The in-principle approval by the FIA for Singapore to host a night race is yet another positive step in our preparations to present to the world a truly unique Formula One race.
"Subject to final safety approvals, Formula One fans worldwide will be able to enjoy a race experience like no other in Singapore from next year - a dramatic night street race set against our beautiful city skyline."
The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix will be held on September 28th 2008.
