Blue Peter launches Olympic competition

Long-running BBC children's television show Blue Peter is searching for two children to take part in the handover ceremonies at the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as part of one of their biggest competitions ever.

Beijing Olympic competition

The two winners will be flown to China where they will play a special role - as yet undisclosed - in the two closing ceremonies of the Beijing Games, in front of a television audience of over two billion. They will represent the children of the UK at the events, marking the beginning of the journey to the London 2012 Games.

Launched this week, the Postcard to Beijing competition is open to all 6 to 12 year olds who are British citizens and closes on 31 March 2008. Children must write a postcard to an imaginary child in Beijing, telling them why they are excited about either of the Games. They also need to describe something that they love doing and include a photo of this. Full details are available on the Blue Peter website. Children can enter online or by post.

The Olympic Handover Ceremony takes place in Beijing on Sunday 24 August and the Paralympic Handover Ceremony takes place on 17 September. Up to two million tourists are expected to head for Beijing this summer. Events are planned in London and across the country on the August Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the Olympics coming to the UK.

The Olympic Torch will arrive in London on 6 April as part of the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay route which covers 22 cities across the globe. Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq is among the many UK celebrities who will help carry the torch through London.
