Turkey shortlisted for EC award

Turkey is among the countries shortlisted for a European Commission competition for tourism destinations.

Turkey will be among the countries participating in the EC's 'European destinations of excellence' competition this year, according to reports.

The initiative aims to find the most popular tourism destination in Europe in 2007, Turkish Press reports.

A particular destination within Turkey will be chosen to represent the country, following negotiations by the ministry of culture and tourism.

According to the EC website, destinations that have developed a tourism product based on their "local intangible heritage" will be considered as locations of excellence.

There are a number of unusual and emerging holiday locations on the EC shortlist, including Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania.

Some established hotspots are also in the running to be named the 'destination of excellence', including Spain, Cyprus, France, Greece and Italy.
