If you're looking for some inspiration about where to go on holiday the influential magazine Condé Nast Traveler has just announced its readers votes for the best cities, hotels and islands to visit.

More than 32,000 readers voted for the annual awards and there were some surprising results. Best city break destination in the USA went to San Francisco for an incredible 16th year in a row, but Charleston in South Carolina beat New York into second place.

Italian cities dominated the favourite city break destinations in Europe. Florence came first, Rome second and Venice joint third with the Austrian city of Salzburg. Perennially popular Sydney came first in the Australia/Pacific region, followed by Melbourne and Queenstown, New Zealand. For a city break in Africa and the Middle East, Traveler readers placed Cape Town first, then Jerusalem and Damascus.

As well as cities, the best hotels around the world were also nominated. Because of the number of high quality hotels in Europe, for the first time this year there were categories for hotels in both northern and southern Europe. Best hotel in northern Europe was voted as the Four Seasons Gresham Palace in Budapest, with the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin runner up. In southern Europe Italy again dominated, with Il Pellicano in Tuscany number one and Il San Pietro di Positano third, separated by the Four Season George V in Paris.

Best hotels in Britain were the Milestone Hotel in London, Lower Slaughter Manor in the Cotswolds, and Chewton Glen in Hampshire.

Some of the world's dream destinations were honoured in the top islands category, including Bermuda (first in the Caribbean and Atlantic), the Hawaiian island of Maui, and the Maldives in the Asia/Indian Ocean region. Best islands in Europe were Mykonos and the Cyclades, Capri, and Sicily.

Condé Nast Traveler is presenting The Luxury Travel Fair in association with British Airways at Olympia in London from November 6-9th. Complimentary entry is included in the ticket price to the Spirit of Christmas Fair with House & Garden taking place in the adjacent hall.
