Steep rise in Tibet visitor numbers

Tibet saw a sharp increase in visitor numbers in the first ten months of 2007, new figures reveal.

Tibet saw a substantial year-on-year increase of 64 per cent in tourist numbers in the first ten months of 2007, according to new figures.

Statistics released by the regional tourism bureau show that 3.72 million people visited Tibet between January and October this year.

A steep increase in revenue was also noted this year, with visitors bringing 4.4 billion yuan (£288 million) into Tibet in the first ten months of 2007, 84 per cent more than last year.

Japan was the biggest market for Tibet, with 78,000 holidaymakers, followed by the United States, which saw 58,000 people travel to the region this year.

Total overseas visitors numbered 350,000 between January and October 2007, an increase of 150 per cent on 2006.

A number of factors contributed to the growth of the travel market, the Tibetan Tourism Bureau said, including the improvement of transportation and overseas promotional drives.
