Spain 'top for Brits at Xmas'
Spanish destinations are the most popular for Britons on winter holidays, it has been claimed.
Spain is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Britons in the winter as well as the summer, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
A spokesperson for the group said that the main reason for the popularity of Spain, and in particular the Canary Islands, is simply the warm weather.
However Abta representative Frances Tuke also said that the number of people who own real estate abroad feeds the trend.
"Because of the huge numbers of people who have holiday homes in Spain, that is our top destination," she said.
"But the Canary Islands in particular top the numbers because the weather is so good over Christmas."
Some long-haul destinations are also popular, according to Ms Tuke, as many people visit family in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and elsewhere.
