South African tourism 'growing steadily'

Figures have been released showing that South African tourism has grown steadily every year since 2002.

The South African travel industry has grown steadily every year since the introduction of the tourism growth strategy in 2002, according to new figures.

Statistics from South African Tourism, the company responsible for marketing the industry, covering the period from 2002 to 2006, show that there were 35.4 million foreign arrivals in the country over the four-year period.

Some 23 million of those visitors came for leisure purposes and the remainder came to visit friends or relatives, to go shopping or for business reasons.

More than ten million of the tourists in South Africa between 2002 and 2006 were long-haul travellers, from markets such as the UK, France and Germany.

Moeketsi Mosola, chief executive of South Africa Tourism, said the research confirmed the "significant contribution" that the industry had made to the economy in recent years.

He also said that the data would enable the market to learn how to further exploit tourism to boost economic growth in the future.
