Singapore sees 6% visitor boost

The Singapore Tourism Board has released figures showing a six per cent year-on-year rise in visitor numbers in October.

Some 911,000 tourists visited Singapore in October, 6.2 per cent more than in the previous year, new figures reveal.

Statistics from the country's tourism board show that the Asian and Australasian markets were the strongest contributors to growth for Singapore in October, with numbers led by visitors from Indonesia, China, Australia, India and Malaysia.

According to EarthTimes, the growth was attributed to airline promotions, strong marketing and school holiday periods.

The first ten months of the year brought around 8.5 million visitors to Singapore and this is hoped to reach 10.2 million by the end of the year.

This would exceed the 9.7 million travellers who visited the country in 2006 and the tourism board is hoping that, by 2015, the figure will reach 17 million.

The typical nightly rate at Singapore hotels in October was S$219 (£73) and the average rate of occupancy was 89 per cent.

In coming years the country will hope to sustain its success in the travel market with events such as the Formula One grand prix, starting in September next year, and new attractions such as the two integrated resort casinos currently under construction.
