As Lewis Hamilton celebrates becoming Formula 1 World Champion, Singapore is celebrating too after its Grand Prix boosted the number of UK holidaymakers visiting the city.

UK visitors to Singapore in September were up by 3.2% thanks in no small part to the number of Lewis Hamilton fans following his progress to become World Champion. This helped confirm the UK as the largest European market for Singapore with almost half a million visitors in 2007.

“The impact of the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix has been a tremendous boost for Singapore, especially from the UK market, at a time when we are experiencing a challenging global economic environment,” says Singapore Tourism Board representative, Divya Panickar.

Visitor numbers to Singapore were also boosted by a number of complementary events taking place, including the Singapore River Festival, Singapore Motorshow 2008 and Singapore Beer Festival.

September also saw the Hari Raya celebrations begin with the traditional ‘light up’ heralding the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in October.

“Singapore is inspiring more travellers to visit by hosting world-class events such as the Grand Prix, which Singapore will host for the next four years, as well as undertaking a number of substantial development projects,” says Panickar.

Two new resorts – Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa – are being launched in Singapore in 2009 and 2010. A new international cruise centre, watersports centre and Gardens by the Bay are also being launched in the next two years.

Singapore is also set to host some high profile sporting events. In January next year the Volvo Ocean Race will visit the city. Then in August 2010 Singapore will host the first ever Youth Olympic Games. The 12 day event is expected to attract 3,200 athletes and thousands more officials, spectators and media.

British Airways, Qantas and Singapore Airlines all fly direct from Heathrow airport to Singapore. Singapore Airlines also offers flights from Manchester airport to the city.
