Shorter holidays new trend
[4th June 2008]
Only 27% of people surveyed by online travel company ebookers are planning to take the traditional two week summer holiday this year as the credit crunch bites.
Better news perhaps for the beleaguered holiday industry is that 64% of the 25,000 people surveyed said they would be taking a summer holiday but had not yet made a booking.
Only 4% said they would not be booking any holiday this summer. But 22% said they would take less than a weeks holiday this summer.
The rise in popularity of city breaks and maybe also fears of a credit crunch have brought about increased demand for shorter breaks, suggests ebookers.
The most popular city break destinations for those responding to the survey were New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Las Vegas and Barcelona. Interestingly, three of these are in the US and would presumably require a longer city break.
The ebookers survey also shows that people were influenced in their choice of holiday by the strong euro and relatively weak dollar. This helps explain why the USA features prominently in the most desired destinations for people yet to book: New York, Los Angeles, Florida, Dubai and Barcelona.
The survey found that 62% of people were going on a traditional summer beach holiday. Most popular destinations for respondents were Spain, Greece, Florida, California and Thailand.
Whether there will be a stampede of late bookings for summer holidays remains to be seen. But ebookers suggests that the best holiday deals are usually available to early bookers.
