Jerba, Tunisia 'next hotspot'

The Tunisian island of Jerba will be a tourist hotspot in 2008, according to a travel community group.

Travel community TripAdvisor has forecast that the island of Jerba off the coast of Tunisia will be the number one tourist hotspot in 2008.

In a barometer of upcoming travel destinations, based on criteria including search activity and postings by TripAdvisor users, Jerba emerged as the top location for 2008, followed by Makandi Bay in Egypt.

Exotic destinations dominated the top five, with Phangnga, Thailand and Kovalam, India in third and fourth positions respectively, followed by Sabaudia, Italy.

Asilah, Morocco; Ko Phangan, Thailand and La Plagne, France also made it into the top ten list of upcoming destinations, as did Yangshuo, China and Kotor, Montenegro.

TripAdvisor's annual survey of its community found that beach trips are still a hit with travellers, with 64 per cent of people saying they would prefer to relax by the sea than do anything else on holiday.

The poll also gave an emphatic thumbs-down to the prospect of mobile phones being used on planes, with 90 per cent of British travellers and 78 per cent of holidaymakers worldwide disapproving of the idea.
