Ireland shows strong tourism figures

Official figures have been released showing growth in Ireland's tourism industry.

Almost seven million people visited Ireland in the first ten months of the year, an increase of four per cent on the corresponding period in 2006, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office.

Two of the most important source markets for Ireland - Britain and North America - both saw growth in October, a fact that was welcomed by the minister for arts, sport and tourism.

British visitor numbers saw year-on-year growth of two per cent in October, while the US market increased by one per cent.

It was mainland Europe, however, that provided the steepest increase in figures, with six per cent more people from the continent visiting Ireland this year than in October 2006.

Tourism minister Seamus Brennan said: "As we approach the end of 2007, all the indications are that we will have enjoyed another record year for Irish tourism.

"I am particularly pleased to note that the October monthly figures show that both the North American and British markets show an increase compared to the corresponding month in 2006."

Ireland's most recent budget provided the tourism industry with record funding of €170 million (£123 million), which Mr Brennan said would ensure continued growth in 2008.
