The number of people flying from the UK to Malta increased by more than 100,000 to over 1.1 million in 2007, with low cost airline Ryanair adding more flights.

Ryanair now has the second biggest market share of scheduled airlines flying to Malta, carrying more than 222,000 passengers to the Mediterranean island in 2007. Air Malta still remains the biggest carrier, with a 54.8% market share.

The other major airlines offering flights to Malta include British Airways in third place, British Jet in fifth place, and another low fare airline Clickair in tenth place.

This year easyJet is beginning new flights from Gatwick and Manchester airport to Malta, but British Jet has pulled out and has signed an agreement with Air Malta to carry its passengers.

Holidaymakers from the UK are the mainstay of tourism in Malta accounting for 37.6% of inbound air passengers. Italy and Germany provide the next largest number of tourists.

The most popular destinations from Malta are Gatwick with 304,000 passengers, closely followed by Manchester airport with just over 237,000. Three other UK airports are in the top 10 – Heathrow in fourth, Luton airport in seventh, and Birmingham airport in tenth.

Malta continues to be a popular winter sun destination from the UK, with a good range of hotels and a generally mild climate. The city of Valletta is a world heritage site, while the ancient city of Mdina is another popular tourist attraction.

Wellness and spa holidays to Malta are also growing in popularity. Many of the island’s five star hotels offer spa and fitness facilities. Medical tourism is another growth area, and Malta is often called “the hospital of the Mediterranean”.
