Germany 'stays popular' after World Cup
Germany continued to be a popular destination with tourists this year, according to new figures.
The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) has claimed that the popularity of the country with foreign visitors stayed consistent this year following the World Cup in 2006.
Figures released by the tourism association show that there were 37.4 million overnight stays by international visitors in the first eight months of 2007.
This represents an increase of three per cent on the corresponding period in 2006.
Britain was among the main source markets for Germany in the first eight months of the year, with 2.89 million overnight stays in the country, behind only the Netherlands and the USA.
In order to ensure that this growth continues, the GNTO will be undertaking a number of promotional activities in the UK, which will market Germany as a city break location and a destination for active as well as recreational holidays.
The national tourist office claims that Germany offers "numerous possibilities" for winter holidays, including historic towns, Christmas markets, hot spas and winter sport facilities.
