Emirates begins work on $69m resort

Emirates has commenced work on its $69 million resort development in Australia.

Dubai-based airline Emirates has begun work on its $69 million (£33.3 million) luxury Wolgan Valley resort in Australia's Blue Mountains.

The development is the carrier's first project outside Dubai and will transform 4,000 acres of distressed farming land into a valuable conservation site.

Only two per cent of the land will be used to create the Emirates resort, which will consist of 40 individual suites and a main area offering a spa, pool and conference facilities.

The rest of the land will be restored to its natural state with the reintroduction of native flora and fauna.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates, said: "We are delighted to see this project taking shape after many years of careful planning.

"The search for this location began in 2004 and we are now well on our way to making Emirates Wolgan Valley resort and spa an important asset for Australian tourism, the local community and Emirates."

The establishment will welcome its first guests in late 2009, 70 per cent of whom are expected to be international visitors.
