BA launches new flights to India

British Airways is launching new flights from Heathrow to the Indian city of Hyderabad in October, adding to its flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata.

BA will offer five flights a week to Hyderabad, which is home to India’s fast expanding IT industry. “Hyderabad has a fast growing economy based on IT, business process outsourcing and biotech industries and we believe that there will be a strong business demand for our flights which will be the only direct services between the city and the UK,” says British Airways commercial director, Robert Boyle.

Air India currently flies to Hyderabad from Heathrow, but its flights go via Mumbai (Bombay). There are also flights to Hyderabad from other European hubs including Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

India is an important market for airlines in the UK, both for holidaymakers, UK residents returning to see family in India, and now increasingly business people.

“India is our largest market outside North America and with the Hyderabad route we will fly there 48 times each week. This is up from 19 flights per week when the UK/India aviation market was liberalised in October 2005,” says Boyle.

BA currently offers flights from Heathrow twice a day to Delhi and Mumbai, daily to Bangalore, five times a week to Chennai, and three times a week to Kolkata.

Other airlines flying from Heathrow to Mumbai include Air India, Virgin Atlantic and Jet Airways. Air India also offers flights from Birmingham International airport to Mumbai. British Airways, Air India, Virgin Atlantic and Jet Airways all offer flights from Heathrow to Delhi.

There are also charter flights from Heathrow, Birmingham and Manchester to popular holiday destinations in India such as Goa.
