Slovakia resort wins green award

The AquaCity resort in Poprad, Slovakia was named the world's leading green resort at the World Travel Awards, leading its owner to claim that luxury and eco-responsibility "can go hand in hand".

AquaCity overcame competition from resorts in top destinations such as the Maldives, the Caribbean, Australia and South America.

Accepting the award, Jan Talensky, owner and chief executive of the resort, said that AquaCity represented the fulfilment of his ambition to create a luxury resort that runs on geothermal water.

The complex also uses solar energy to power its hotels, pools, leisure facilities and spa.

Mr Talensky added: "AquaCity is now a globally recognised example of how we can create sustainable tourism, one of the most overwhelming issues the travel industry faces today.

"It is a blueprint for future tourism and a far reaching example of how to use green technology to commercial advantage."
