New Disney resort to open in Hawaii

Tourism in Hawaii is set to be boosted further in coming years with the opening of a new Disney resort.

However Disney said that the new centre will not be the same as the resorts found in Paris, Florida and elsewhere.

The 21 acres of land on the Hawaiian island of Oahu will instead be turned into an 800-room luxury hotel complex, the first of its kind that will not be situated close to a Disney theme park.

Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, said: "This resort hotel will give our guests another way to visit an exciting part of the world with a brand they trust."

Some $144 million (£70.7 million) has been spent on the plot of land and the complex is expected to open in 2011.

Disney currently operates 38 resort hotels around the world, offering more than 35,000 rooms.
