Sydney 'world's top city'

The Australian city of Sydney has been voted the 'number one city in the world' at the Conde Nast Traveller readers' choice awards.

This is the 11th time that readers of one of America's best-known travel magazines have voted the Australian metropolis the top city in the world.

Sandra Nori, New South Wales minister for tourism, said there was "no doubt that Sydney is everyone's favourite city".

"Sydney's enviable mix of events, beauty, sophistication and relaxed vibe is what Sydneysiders love about it and it's also what makes it so attractive to visitors," she added.

"The readers of Conde Nast Traveller magazine are sophisticated travellers who actively seek out new and exciting destinations. It's a great credit to Sydneysiders and our tourism industry that we have remained one of their favourite world cities for so long."

Some 28,000 readers of the magazine voted in the poll and assessed cities on criteria including ambience, friendliness, cultural sights, restaurants, lodging and shopping.

Sydney was joined in the top-five list by Florence, San Francisco, Bangkok and Vancouver.
