Brits name boring tourist attractions
A study by Virgin Travel Insurance found that many Brits return from their holidays decidedly underwhelmed by several world-famous attractions.
Paris' Eiffel Tower tops the list as the most disappointing tourist attraction, but UK holidaymakers also revealed that the Louvre, Times Square, Las Ramblas and the Statue of Liberty left them cold.
In the UK, Stonehenge, the Angel of the North and Blackpool Pier were all named as disappointing tourist spots.
"It's easy to be swayed by brochures that opt for the mainstream and focus on cliched tourist sights around the world, but many of them are overcrowded and disappointing," commented travel expert Felice Hardy.
"Pick carefully and don't always go for the obvious - natural phenomena are usually more exciting than the man-made, and can be wonderfully free of tourists."
Virgin also listed some worldwide tourist spots which it said were sure to excite holidaymakers. These included The Treasury at Petra, the Masai Mara and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Jason Wyer-Smith, spokesperson for Virgin Travel Insurance, concluded: "It seems thousands of Brits are returning from their hard earned holidays feeling a bit let down when famous tourist spots don't live up to expectation.
"The key to holiday heaven could well be seeking out the hidden gems rather than joining the crowds in holiday hell."
