Wind turbines 'to generate 10% of EMA energy'

A spokesperson for Nottingham East Midlands airport has revealed the hub's plans to generate a tenth of its energy with wind turbines.

A spokesperson for Nottingham East Midlands airport (EMA) has claimed that regional air hubs are placing an emphasis on environmental responsibility and outlined EMA's airport's own plans for energy efficiency.

The representative said that the East Midlands base is "leading the way" by showing an awareness of environmental issues.

"We were the first UK airport to commit to making our ground operations carbon neutral by 2012 as well as the only UK airport to have successfully retained the international environment standard ISO14001 for four years running," she said.

"Our 'firsts' don't stop there - we are also planning to install wind turbines on site to generate ten per cent of the airport's energy."

Nottingham EMA was named the world's leading eco-friendly airport at the 2007 World Travel Awards.

The hub was praised for initiatives including its target to become carbon neutral by 2012 and its environmentally friendly pier, which includes ground heating pumps, wind catchers and water recycling facilities.
