New check in at Heathrow T4 takes shape
[November 14th 2008]
As the £4 billion plan to transform Heathrow airport continues, the new check in area at Terminal 4 has reached the topping out stage.
The extended 6000 square metre check in area at Terminal 4 is due to open in late 2009, but the traditional topping out ceremony marks the building reaching its full height.
The topping out of the new check in area marks a major milestone in the transformation of Terminal 4. We have ambitious plans to improve the passenger experience by creating more room for check in, with 33 new check in desks and a light, spacious forecourt and plaza area," explains BAA interim capital director, Rob Stewart.
The £100 million check in extension is part of a £200 million project to transform Terminal 4. This will also see the construction of two new aircraft stands to accommodate the new Airbus A380 superjumbo, a new baggage handling system and renovated departure lounges and piers. The improvements will enable Terminal 4 to accommodate 45 airlines and serve as the base for the SkyTeam airline alliance.
Over the next five years airport operator BAA plans to spend £4 billion creating "world class facilities" at Heathrow. It says the entire airport will be either rebuilt, refurbished or redesigned.
Some £2 billion will be spent on developing Heathrow's Eastern Campus, including the construction of the new Heathrow East terminal which will replace Terminal 2. A further £120 million will be spent refurbishing Terminal 3, and £300 million constructing Terminal 5C.
