Liverpool airport to get new KLM flights to Amsterdam
[November 3rd 2008]
For the first time in 70 years Liverpool John Lennon airport will get flights to Amsterdam Schiphol airport with Dutch airline KLM.
KLM first started flights from Liverpool to Amsterdam in 1934, but was forced to abandon them at the outbreak of World War 2 in 1939. The airline has decided to re-introduce the route after research revealed demand from local businesses as well as students and leisure travellers.
Flights between Liverpool John Lennon airport and Amsterdam Schiphol airport will operate three times a day from March 29th next year and seats go on sale tomorrow. Flights will depart from Liverpool at 6.15am, 10.30am and 5.30pm. The route will be operated by the KLM Cityhopper flying 80 seater Fokker 70 aircraft.
We are delighted to be renewing our partnership with Liverpool after such a long absence, says KLM senior vice president network, Pieter Elbers.
Being the only major network carrier to include Liverpool in its network, KLM further strengthens its position in the UK, one of the most important markets in the extensive network of KLM, Elbers adds.
Liverpool will become the fifteenth airport in the UK to be served by KLM. From Amsterdam Schiphol, passengers flying from Liverpool will have access to over 100 destinations worldwide through KLMs extensive network.
Liverpool is a most interesting destination for business and leisure travellers alike, KLM says in a press statement. In terms of business, the city has developed strongly in recent years. Liverpool is one of the United Kingdoms fastest growing cities, is located in the fourth largest urban region of the UK and it is Europes cultural capital for 2008, the airline continues.
The new flights to Amsterdam are more good news for Liverpool airport after low cost airline Ryanair launched six new routes from the airport last week. The new flights are to Gdansk and Szczecin in Poland, the Canary Islands of Tenerife and Fuerteventura, Faro in the Algarve and Knock in Ireland.
Today Ryanair is launching new flights from Liverpool airport to Paris Beauvais airport.
