Glasgow airport invests in terminal
Airport operator BAA is spending almost £25 million in terminal improvements at Glasgow airport this year, and will make savings by closing the second runway.
It promises to be an exciting year for the citys airport, with a massive 50% increase in infrastructure spend, including the biggest single investment made by BAA Glasgow for a generation, the new Skyhub development, says Glasgow airport MD, Gordon Dewar.
When it opens in nine months times Skyhub will transform the experience for passengers using Glasgow airport, offering state of the art security screening, and a wider choice of bars, shops and restaurants for a fast, safe and enjoyable airport experience, adds Dewar. All passengers will fly from the same terminal when the 4000 square metre Skyhub opens.
Passenger numbers at Glasgow airport fell in 2007 by 1.1% to around 8.7 million, partly as a result of the terrorist attack. In contrast Edinburgh airport recorded a growth of 5% to around 9 million passengers, making it Scotlands busiest airport.
The second runway at Glasgow airport will be closed later this year to reduce costs. Only 257 flights used the short runway in 2006/07. Flights currently using the runway will be able to use the main runway.
With so few flights now operating from the short runway it makes no commercial sense to invest in a facility that is scarcely used, comments Dewar. We believe it makes better sense to invest our resources in front line improvements, such as the ongoing £30 million Skyhub extension, that benefit all of our passengers.
